Welcome Witbooi's extraordinary story brings community development South Africa into sharp focus, showing how the most difficult personal experiences can become a force for change.Today, as director of the Brightspark Foundation, he works with young people and communities to tackle some of the circumstances that allow gangs and crime to flourish. His story gives him an unusual understanding of both the attraction of gang culture and the enormous difficulty of leaving it behind.

In our conversation, Welcome talks candidly about growing up in Valhalla Park on the Cape Flats, becoming involved in gangsterism and eventually finding himself in Pollsmoor Prison. He reflects on the choices he made, the environment around him and the experiences that began to change the direction of his life.

But this is not simply a story about crime or prison. It is about what happens afterwards. Welcome explains how his past became the foundation for work focused on youth development, social change and community development in South Africa. Rather than allowing his history to define the limits of his future, he has used what he learned to reach young people facing some of the same pressures he once faced himself.

Through the Brightspark Foundation, Welcome works to create opportunities, build resilience and encourage young people to imagine lives beyond gangs and violence. We discuss why meaningful community projects need to understand the realities young people are living with, and why lasting social impact depends on more than simply telling them to make different choices.

Welcome also talks about leadership, responsibility and the importance of people who are prepared to return to their own communities and become part of the solution. His experience shows how grassroots action can grow from lived experience and how people who understand a problem from the inside can sometimes be uniquely placed to challenge it.

Our conversation explores gangsterism in South Africa, youth development, community projects and the difficult work of creating social change where poverty, violence and limited opportunities can shape young people's futures.

Welcome's journey is ultimately about transformation, but also about purpose. Community development in South Africa is not an abstract idea in his story. It is practical, personal work: reaching young people before their choices close around them and helping to create opportunities for a different future.

This is a conversation about second chances, community, leadership and the possibility of turning experience into action.
